as you can see, am very interested in learning as much as needed about the battery, and i am able to know its condition so it will not fail unexpectedly. and am here with you guys because i see that some of you have batteries that last well over 5 years.
i want to learn from you more details. as many as you want, about what you do to get that. so, please start telling anything you do.
please?

Hello Phil,
the most simple rule is to keep the battery charged.
They love it.

thanks for the video and the advice about keeping the battery always charged.
still, if anyone here can provide more details besides that, like what battery specifically, what charger he uses, and if desulfating, anything, and how long the battery has been in use.
thanks again.

Phil,

another rule is to avoid extreme temperatures and temperature gradients. Avoid parking in direct bright sunlight. Use a garage.

very interesting. thanks. but this battery is not the kind used for starting, so is made in a different way, and the results apply just to this kind.
what am trying to learn is what you guys do to keep the starter battery we use in our crossfires for so long. as many details as possible.
;winke; thanks again.

Hi Phil,

you wrote to use an AGM type lead acid battery, which is similiar to the AGMs of the mentioned wheel chair.
The Crossfire is equipped with a wet kind (SLI) by default. This, of course, is a slightly different kind of lead acid battery.
Sometimes an other type may be used, GEL. But this is usually not ideal as starter or for mobile purposes,
because of the most fixed electrolyte, which restricts the high current properties needed in starter applications.
But you should be aware that AGM is not AGM. Some are designed for static usage in battery backup systems, others are designed for usage in mobiles and for cyclic purposes. It is specified in the data sheet of the battery. But you may not be safe in every case. As we found, some years ago, by our long lasting life tests, some data sheets lie.

thank you for your interest to help me.
let me bring this data regarding deep cycle and starting batteries:
Deep Cycle Sealed Lead Acid batteries, as the name suggests, are specifically designed for deep cycling applications. They contain fewer plates than their cranking or starting counterparts. These plates are also much thicker. This reduces the total surface area, resulting in a battery that provides lower max current, but is capable of a much deeper state of charge.
Deep cycle batteries are typically discharged to 50% of their capacity and recharged again. This is known as the depth of discharge (DoD). This level of cycling is generally used in applications where the battery is providing constant current for long periods of time. Such as golf carts, mobility scooters, power banks, RV power banks, Solar energy systems etc.
Deep Cycle vs Cranking
Cranking or Engine Starting Lead Acid Batteries
Engine Start batteries have a larger number of thinner plates. The total current output is affected by the total surface area. With thinner plates per battery, the end result is an increased surface area that will provide a much higher current potential.
Generally Cranking batteries differ to their deep cycle counterparts as they have been specifically designed to produce a large burst of current in a short time frame. This is particularly useful in engine starting applications. Cranking batteries are generally categorized based on their CCA (Cold Cranking Amps) rating. Cold Cranking Amps is a measure of the total current a fully charged battery at -18 degrees celsius can provide for 30 seconds, without dropping below 1.2v per cell (7.2v for a 12v battery). Typically this is 1% of the battery's capacity. The larger the ccA rating, the larger the engine the battery can turn over.
Cranking batteries are not designed to be deep cycled or discharged. They are designed to turn over an engine and sit on float charge which is provided by the vehicles alternator. Discharging a cranking battery will start causing irreversible damage to the battery plates. This will ultimately reduce its performance, total life span and in some cases cause complete failure.

1 just was trying to clarify that the post you brought about the wheelchair is using a different type of battery: deep cycling, and then the way to use and charge is different, even if both are AGM. that is all i was trying to say.
regards.

Hi Phil,
an AGM cycle type battery that allows only 50% DOD is crap.
It should handle down to 10% up to several hundred discharge-recharge cycles.
With LIon we reached much more cycles.
Vehicles, like wheel chairs, are not constant or low current applications.
The span between uphill acceleration with heavy load and downhill braking with recuperation is enourmous.
With high values of current and voltage spikes.

Batteries in cars today do not handle cranking only.
The electric power consuming equipment has gained weight.
So the battery has to fulfill more requirements.
They are more similiar to vehicles than standby applications, but not that hard as mentioned above.
The battery works as a buffer.

Some simple rules, observed by the owner, prolonges the battery life.
If he uses the correct type.
And if the car charge management is in good condition. This may be the main reason for early fails.
